The first time I dropped my SX50, I was in a library with a carpeted floor over concrete. It fell out of my backpack from a table height of approximately 28". I checked it out thoroughly and after many subsequent picture taking uses, experienced no problems.
The second time, I was walking and had the camera improperly secured in my backpack. The zipper had not completely closed, leaving a gap large enough for the camera to "escape" which it did. I heard a loud metallic crash sound alerting me to the problem. Seeing what had happened, my immediate reaction was "now I may have to buy the SX60 or an alternative camera." With mixed feelings. Alas, the SX50 was fine. The metallic sound I heard was made by the camera making the first point of contact with the street via the circular polarizing filter which I almost always have on the camera. The filter has a noticeable dent in it, showing brass, but works O.K. except it binds up slightly when coming full circle.
Had I been walking on grass, or a similar surface that would have muffled the sound, I probably would have lost the camera.
I know I can tether it easily enough so it will no longer escape, but haven't gotten around to it. A suggested good practice for those who carry the camera in a backpack.
Camera continues to work fine after two drops, but I do not recommend the practice, unless you want an excuse to buy new gear.
Some say that current cameras are stronger than we expect because they are made out of resilient plastics.
KEEP IT AROUND YOUR NECK.
Well I found a way to destroy mine. I left it out on my back porch for a week, while it rained. I can now tell you, without reservation, that it was not waterproof.

Well Scoutman, it's a good thing you are only dropping your SX50 camera it's not like it's something IMPORTANT that you need for survival or anything IMPORTANT like making PHOTOGRAPHS!(cough, snort, gasp...)
