If you enjoy reading about drones, be SURE to check out the January issue of Popular Science; (it has a picture of BAE System's Taranis drone on the front cover; the article on drones was well worth the $4.99 the magazine cost. )

BTW; Almost every time I drive to Indianapolis to take my wife to the airport, I stop by a great R.C. model flying field, just west of Plainfield, In. The flying field is right beside a very old prison; the last time I stopped by there, I had my wife with me, (I had just picked her up at the airport which is only maybe 8 to 10 miles east of the flying field ); anyway, one of the members was telling me that the prison officials had come over and had a long "discussion" about them flying their drones, and to be SURE none of them went near the prison fence! They like having the R.C. Club there because they had been having a lot of problems with people "shooting" drugs over the fence into the prison yard with sling shots, and with the R.C. Club members always around, they keep an eye out for any cars or "strangers" and alert the prison officials any time they notice anything that might need "checking out".

I was afraid my wife would be "bored" by R.C. models, but I needn't have worried! Several members came over and spent some time welcoming us and explaining to her about the planes that were flying that day. By the time we left, she's wanting me to "take up" flying R.C. models and joining the R.C. club! (That's all I need.......another hobby! )

There are a lot of states with regulation pending but I feel like it will come down to FAA regulations covering all states. The main thing is keeping manned aircraft safe. One of our "toys" sucked into an engine could possibly bring down an airliner. Can you imagine unregulated "drones" flying around a major event like the Super Bowl or Macy's parade. It would be comical. Although possibly dangerous. We live in interesting times.

That's the way my local flying club is. Friendly people and they are eager to share their knowledge. They have three main flying areas and one is in a field next to a county jail. So far no problems there. One flying field is on city property next to a sports complex. The mayor came by one day and outlined some rules as far as flying during sporting events. Just keeping a safe distance from the fields and bleachers. It helps that he's an R.C. pilot himself. The city even paid for a sign for the flying club. I hope to be in the air after the first of the year with a quad-copter and GoPro. Check out Skypixel for some great videos and stills.

Just make sure she's not a back seat quad driver giving directions and telling you what you're doing wrong.

I didn't read each and every 'law' for each state named but what I get out of this is an individuals right to privacy of person and property but not to prohibit personal or recreational use. Is this correct?

Neither did I. It appears that some drone operators have offended aviation authorities and others that were peaking where they shouldn't. Haven't paid much attention to it as it hasn't reared its head in Florida, yet. :-D

I think lots of people are getting confused between the terms "Quadcopter" (although they can have more than four rotors) and actual drones. I bought a quadcopter last year, mainly to get some cool aerial shots of my area. Nice toy, but in no way should it be confused with a drone.

"Drone" is now a generic term I think. People not familiar with the remote control aircraft hobby probably think of the military drones used in the Middle East to fire missiles. Maybe a bad choice of word to describe the quads and fixed wing model aircraft for recreational use. My brother has been in the hobby for years and just this past year got more interested in the quads. He normally will post to YouTube. I like Skypixel. Some great video and stills on there.

No kidding. Just like photography you can get in cheap but once you get the bug it gets expensive real quick. That's what I'm looking at as far as a quad and the related equipment. What do I want? The max. What can I afford? Definitely not the max.

I went to a big National (I think that was it) RC Show in Lawrenceville, Illinois several years ago... Strolled around looking at the planes in the show (Static & flying) and then into the vendors tents... Made quick exit from Vendors tents and went back to looking at others planes..LOL...

One really interesting plane was a C130 with 4 GREAT BIG engines.... It took off, flew around for quite a while, then made a rather slow pass in front of crowd.... Back Loading ramp came down, Model Jeep drove out, parachute came out, jeep landed, parachute popped off and jeep Drove off..... Plane came back around with ramp up and made a great landing....

Great to watch...

Mike

I've seen videos of tanks being dropped that way and they hit the ground running. Pretty amazing.
