Wonder if you'd like it with the shadows highlighted in Photoshop Elements 10?

Also if you happen to have a recent Nikon with Active D-lighting it will give you the detail in the shadows when you take other photos where that situation exists. I have my default settings to use it on Auto but if time allowed might have tried to put it on manual with a higher setting for one like this.

With the D5100 you can also apply it in-camera after the shot: another option when mobile critters don't allow for fussing.

Good shot.
If you notice, you were able to achieve the "catch-light" effect in the birds eye; thats important.

Good shot. We don't have alot of Hawks or Eagle here either but we do have lots of mourning doves though. They make really good subjects because they don't move around much and you can get really close to them if your patient ( or have a good zoom lens).
