Actually the photo and the story seem to be separate issues. The tree the natives are cutting still has the butt end roots (cut off) and no logger will fell a tree that way. The normal point to cut a tree is just above the butt spread so more of the tree can yield boards. It appears the photo and story are in conflict.

That's a common practice online. I'll get an email with an photo and a link to an article. The article will feature no pictures or different ones. I doubt that anyone would have been taking pictures while they were cutting down the tree.

Just look at: The giant Samauma tree, and then put away everything you know about standard logging practices in the "civilized" world !
