I'm not an expert on ES but comparing these "found" images to the ones he is most known for I think I can see why these are not more widely known. They are simple not as good as his best work. For the most part. Odd shadow here, flare there, less flattering pose, etc. They likely are the outtakes. It was typical, shoot a cassette of 36 exposures, get 2 or 3 keepers. Still thanks for the post, it is interesting.

I must be missing something or the link took me to the wrong spot. I have seen every one of the Steichen examples before. And a long time ago. I was hoping to see something not seen until now.

Link took me to the same article as before, I've not seen these before, sorry you are disappointed.

I'll google it and see what come up. Am not disappointed. Have always loved Steichen. His "Family of Man" which featured two photographs by my friend, including the lead photograph, was wonderful and has never been matched.

Makes People like Jonathan Jones of the Guardian, and his ilk, seem like an asterisk to the history of art. No other medium. including painting, has the ability to move people as deeply as a certain photograph. (I have in mind one such as Eddy Adams' phoptograph of the execution of a V.C. man by General Loan.)

Excuse my rant. I detest 90% of all art critics. They, most of them, are leaches with no talent of their own but to sound off at the mouth. It's the loudest who get the space.

When the headlines say unpublished gems you do expect to see something new and when seen before it is a disappointment but well worth seeing again.

I've seen these before too. I guess that just shows how old I am. :) Steichen was my favorite photographer when I was young. He was a WWII chief of photography for the US Navy. Thanks for posting.

Hey wilikioti, Us oldies gotta stick together, don't we? Maybe we should form our own club with a sign on the door: "No one under 75 allowed."

Or how 'bout this - Hand 'em a folding post card camera and roll of Kodak 117 film and see if they know what to do with it.

(Just looking to tickle yer funny bone.)

Or a Brownie Instamatic 117 roll was nice in a Roli.

I knew my mind was slipping. The film I am thinking of was 122 - not 117. Oh well!.
