Helen - called Adorama and received a quote on a six-month old Fuji camera and lens complete with all accessories, papers, manuals (still in orig wrapping), original boxes, etc. Quote from Norman was $700. I thought it was on the low side, but have bought/sold often enough to understand how "used" markets work. Submitted the camera and was stunned when the actual quote was reduced nearly 30% - to $500. My orig cost had been $1,300 and the equipment was not 'grey market'. $500 meant a loss of over 60%.

When I protested I was told Fuji had suddenly greatly reduced their prices. Checking Fuji's website and prices quoted by other major dealers I determined that was not true. I asked Adorama to return the equipment, but had to jump thru many, many hoops to get it back. Meanwhile, the 'bid' dropped even further and Adorama sent me a check for $350 - half of the original quote - with no explanation whatsoever. While I was still trying to get the equipment back, I cashed the check which bore no instructions to the contrary. I fully expected to return the money once the camera was back in my possession, but ended up paying my bank a fee when, without notice of any kind, Adorama stopped payment on its check. After phone calls and increasingly strident emails I got all the equipment back.

I was not at all surprised when B&H - just down the street - quoted the same $500 price for the outfit without even seeing it. I did not waste time sending it in 'for evaluation'.

Thank you BOTH for the exceptionally gratifying experience. Helen, I know you will offer fifty reasons to explain, but no true apology. Lesson learned, I no longer care. To my fellow UHH members, I can only sing (off key) START SPREADING THE WORD...

I can see why you are annoyed with Adorama but all B & H did was quote you a low price, and maybe the price they needed to pay in order to profit from the deal. You can't expect anyone to work for you for nothing. In any case it's KEH that has the sterling reputation in the used market.

I previously sold a Panasonic camera to KEH. The transaction was handled smoothly, but they have a rep for low-balling their purchase offers. I've had other unsatisfactory dealings recently with B&H so that factored into my view of them. IMHO they are all more arrogant than they need to be. /Ralph

If you are in Mexifornia and buy the D5300 plus two lenses on sale from Costco, be prepared to pay sales tax on the pre-sale price. Sneaky little print next to the posted sale price. It is legal here, but the print is miniscule. I always go with BandH. Great service, great prices.

Thanks for the info. I have a hard time parting with any of my photo stuff so have never sold any. Would go the Ebay route, sell on UHH, or to a friend if I did.

Buy from the usual suspects Adorama, B&H. When you buy form the Unusual suspects you tread stormy waters.
If you are not sure you can always go to http://www.resellerratings.com/ and get an idea of the sellers ratings.

I don't think resellerratings is as good as it used to be, so I wouldn't put my trust in them. I buy at B&H. Adorama and Cameta are two other reputable companies.

I too think resellerratings has become diluted, so I still use it as a gauge, and check the sellers again.

Agree on Cametta and a refurb. I initially rejected the refurb. idea, but spoke with Enrico at Cametta and he made sense! Most refurbs are units that have been in store demos or have been handed to some of the pros to shoot...then returned for a complete refurb, calibrate and packaging. Instead of an assembly line product, you are essentially get a hand made unit! more than half of my stuff is refurb. now!

A GREAT company realizes that it is far easier to keep current customers than to get new ones, and they go the extra mile to make their customers happy. B&H photo and Adorama are such companies. B&H is the ultimate photography superstore, and they offer tons of educational programs not only at their superstore but online at Youtube.

Happy current customers lead to more new customers as well. Just look at how many are recommending them in this topic! It's a long term view that is sadly far too lacking in businesses today.

If you buy from Costco, many of their items have a double warranty. If the manufacturer gives one year, they will double it. Check on this, as this and their generous return policy, make buying from there very comfortable. I'm sorry I don't have time this minute to peruse all 7 pages of responses, so this may be duplicated. If so, I'm sorry! Goodnight, and Merry Christmas all!

Costco is a kit packager. So higher end camera's are not their.
As far as I know they will take a large TV back anytime in the
first couple of years is you are unsatisfied or have issues
with the set. Honestly I have bought used sometimes like a lens but with camera's prefer to buy new when I can afford it.
Good luck.
