I think the clouds were just the right density to make the sunlight appear dark red, but there was enough variation to provide different color contrasts.

Thanks Swamp-cork. I was not convinced that the downloads were worth looking at, but you can see the two microwave towers on the horizon where the sun is setting.

A few years ago I took many photos as the light changed during a sunset over Lake Erie. I was standing on a fishing pier and used the railing as a tripod.
