This photo was taken from the grounds of the Québec aquarium. From this location we can see two bridges on the South shore of Québec.
The dark bridge was completed in 1907 and continues to be used for car and rail traffic. It was originally erected in 1903 but collapsed a few years after, killing the majority of the 100 worked who were within an hour of the end of their workday.
It was rebuilt in 1906 and it again collapsed as they were installing the centre span. An investigation revealed manufacturing defects as the cause. 13 workers were killed.
It was finally inaugurated with the centre span completely replaced late in 1907.
It's been in operation since then but the iron structure is in need of painting and an eyesore. The $200 million price tag has been delaying the contract for many years. It is however deemed safe for travelling.
The second bridge was erected in 1970 and presents no issues.
A view from the Quebec aquarium.

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment Linda, I aprreciated it.
They definitely had immense problems with the bridge; but before that it was the ice road in the winter and the slow boat ferry when there was no ice.
Thanks for looking and commenting CM.

Thank you for the nice comment Jbat. What else?... a nice cup of coffee as I'm reading the replies to this post. It's 12 degrees F this morning.
excellent work george.!!!!.nicely done.!!!
Beautiful photo, just a pity so many lives were taken by the bridge. Its like it shouldn't have been built, nature trying to reclaim its space.
