There is a Tesla dealer in the Brea Mall. They have the chassis on display. What a great build, the only fluid needed is for the windshield washer. Sales man says a model under $50,000 will be on the market in a couple of years. The free Super Charge stations are one hell of a sales gimmick.

It is the best Advertising ever. One of the big problems with all Electric Cars is range and availability of Recharge locations, and the time necessary to recharge.
I would not take any Electric vehicle on a long trip . The Model S comes in several varieties, the least expensive does around 180 Miles per charge. If Tesla places its Turbo Charge stations at key locations along Interstate hwy, the option to use the model S for out of town trips becomes viable. Add to that the 45 minute recharge time makes it even better, take a rest room break and refresh or have a meal while it fills up.
Tesla is selling a lot of Model S vehicles without very much advertising, it is selling like hot cakes here on the West Coast. The money Tesla is saving on Advertisement is paying for those Turbo Charge stations. Marketing
Genius in my opinion.

How many coal plants need to go on line to supply this service?

The liberal definition of "Free" is that somebody else is paying for it! You've been in the gultch to long! Say Hi to John for me!

Actually, idaholover, they describe in the article using solar panels on the roofs of the charging centers to help with power demands. It looks like they're really trying to do something worthwhile here, while benefiting themselves at the same time. Make no mistake, perfection has not yet been achieved. But I think they should be credited for their effort.

Are these the same solar products who got tax payer stimulus money then went BK and moved to China?

My best guess is SolarCity would be providing the solar panels, as they are one of the other companies Elon Musk is CEO of. I don't think they have moved to China, but I wouldn't testify in court to that effect.

Take the tax rebates away and their marketing comes to an end. It is bogus economics.

I reluctantly agree, Jackinthebox. Let me say, in Tesla's defense, at least they're not doing the Solyndra type deal, where wealthy, politically connected investors (like Nancy Pelosi's husband) get their money back but taxpayers don't. Solar power and electric cars are still children who cannot support themselves. I would like to see an accounting of the subsidies they receive, and one day, when they hold their own in the marketplace, an effort made to repay at least a reasonable portion of these subsidies.

Anyone with an eye to the future would like to think the use of fossil fuels will at least be cut back considerably. I would like to see us free of our dependence on Middle Eastern oil, at least. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our domestic oil companies would come back to us from the Mid-East? Perhaps it's just a dream, but it's a good one!

Not a dream anymore. Enough Oil, gas and coal to last a hundred years.

Of course fossil fuels will run out some time in the very distant future. Other methods will take over when the costs start to be equal.

To insure a level playing field I am all for Free Gasoline if Electricity is provided "free".
Free is a liberal illusion.

Do we really have to address the "Free is a liberal illusion" issue? In our example, Tesla is clearly footing the bill. Whether they consider it advertising, an investment in their future growth, or intend to conceal the cost in the price of their product is irrelevant.

I am not a tree-hugger, Jackinthebox, but if we take fossil fueled power plants out of the equation, electric cars are a less messy means of transport. If we consider Tesla in concert with SolarCity, their goal appears to do just that: take fossil fuel out of the picture. I admire their effort, even though at present it's not without flaws (the internal combustion engine is not "without flaws" either).

I am a somewhat far right conservative, but I'm not going to overlook a good idea just because it may have liberal origins, or be currently promoted by a majority of liberals. Liberals are people, too. And they are not incapable of having good ideas, contrary to conservative dogma.
