Upgraded PS Elements from 11 to 13: Topaz and NIK issues

Everything on my Windows 7 was running perfectly with Photoshop Elements11, Premier Elements 11, Lightroom 5.7, the NIK bundle and a few Topzaz plug-ins. Until the current discount climate temped me into buying the full Topaz bundle and upgrading to Elements 13.

Justifications included 64 bit processing and the next level for RAW in PSE. In PrE there would be better 4K capability and a new video stabilization option. For Topaz, the candy included the new Impression.

First, I installed the full Topaz, to see how it worked in PSE11. It all showed up in the Filters. Sweet.

After a day or two of courage building, I went to work on the Adobe part. And, unpredictable things that happened.

I bought disks rather than download, so the first thing needed was to check for updates. There were two, I presume it was the ACR.

PSE 13 automatically became the default "Edit In" choice. I was hoping to keep PSE 11 until I got it all working.

PSE 13 didn't find any of the Topaz or NIK products.

I didn't know what to do. NIK turned out easy. You download the current demo which is the same as the full version. Since my computer knew it had a serial number somewhere, the NIK stuff dropped into the filter menu without any change to LR.

Topaz was a complete PITA. Because I upgraded to the full deal a week ago, I had fresh installation files. I ran them. Then I untinsalled all of them in Windows, which didn't delete the folders. I deleted them and rand the installation program for the set and, the separate one for Impression. It all installed and I could access it through the Topaz PhotoFXLab or Edit In in LR. But not PSE13.

I learned that In PSE 11 and 13 there is a preferences table for Plug-Ins. You can tell it to look in an additional folder. On their website, Topaz says it should all work, but if not, tells you to set that for the Topaz folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Topaz Labs.

That worked, except for Impressions. It is in a different spot at C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs. What to do since PSE13 only allows one optional filters place. Topaz says to copy C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs\Topaz Impression to C:\Program Files (x86)\Topaz Labs.

It works now, but the process and figuring it out took too much time and effort.

I think you have to install pse before you install Topaz-not after to make it work.

I think your are right. After I put PSE13 on and got it running, I ran the Topaz installation again. And, again. Then I uninstalled PSE11 thinking that was causing confusion and ran the Topaz installation again. Then I, through Windows uninstalled every bit of Topaz I could find and ran the installation again.

None of it worked.

The host program has to go in first, then the plugins. The plug ins can't find it if it isn't there.

I repeat, I put in the new, upgraded host program, uninstalled all of the Topaz programs and then ran the Topaz installation. It didn't work.

To back this up, this is a quote from Topaz:

Topaz and Photoshop Elements 13
Yes, our plugins are compatible with PSE 13. If you cannot find the plugins in your Filter menu, please see here for instructions on how to add them in:

"For Windows:
Please click on Photoshop Elements in the top left corner and select "Preferences".

Check/enable the Additional Plug-ins Folder option then click Choose.
After that, please navigate to: C: \ Program Files and select the Topaz Labs folder.

Then click Choose (or it may say Save/OK) to save this back to Photoshop.

Click OK to save your changes, then restart Photoshop. Once Photoshop opens, go to your Filter menu and you should be able to access Topaz."

In other words, Topaz is saying that if you buy the newest version 13 of Photoshop Elements as a step up from an older version, the Topaz Installation program WILL NOT put anything in the Filters menu. You have to do it by hand.

Then, if you also bought the new Topaz Impressions, it installs independently and you must find it and copy it to where the rest of the the Plug-Ins are installed.

I feel your frustration, but congratulate you on getting to the bottom of it. I went through the same process, but an somewhat philosophical about - fix once, use many.

Update: I got a response from Topaz that they fixed it for Windows BETWEEN when I bought it and when I installed it. And, that I should try it again.

aaayes, Bob may I add another sage saying from the far east birth place of DSLRs... "the sound of one shutter clicking."

I do believe that PSE has a "preference" where you can tell it where to find the pugin:

or with out the troublesome for some "s"

Having gone through similar processes with software in the past, I can honestly say I feel your pain.

On the flip side, you just gave a pretty good step-by-step description on how to resolve the issue that hopefully will assist many others who will go down the same path you just went, and I commend you for that.

I too, just upgraded to PSE 13 and bought Topaz's Black Friday 17 programs. Now I know how to get everything going. Thank you,
