This is the normal exposure with NO processing whatsoever opened as a Raw in Camera Raw and then Photoshop. The second image is the same file but with a High Pass Filter at 149 pixels applied to better show up the problem.
The dark image of the three taken also shows the same halo. In the slightly underexposed version the sky is blown so its not apparent.
I always take a Raw and a jpeg together and the halo shows up on the jpeg just the same

Never had halos in straight from camera image before. Anyone got an idea why this occurred?
This photo was one of 3 exposures taken with a vie... (show quote)

I've seen halos such as this when the black point is set too high... and I've never seen in in an unprocessed image file.

The High Pass Filter was only applied so that you and others would see the halo more clearly.

The high pass filter creates halos. That's what it does. It's not accentuating an existing halo, it's creating one where there wasn't one to begin with.

Billy its simple, you are over cooking the PP work, just be a little less aggressive with sliders. Also be a little aware of your horizons?

Geoff My man I went to great lengths to explain THIS WAS THE UNPROCESSED IMAGE!!! Straight from Raw and saved as jpeg. No processing at all. So now explain the halo because I cannot.

Re horizon if you look in the HDR section you will find this image straightened to make ya happy!! Posted last week I believe. I admit to being beyond my prime and needing to wear spectacles but do not fear, my breakdown in the faculties dept has not yet got to the stage where I post pissed horizons on my finished work!!!!

Billy you have my sincere apologies, I total miss read your post. It is not my nature to be rude or offensive to anyone. Maybe if I am causing offence its time for me to move on.

no no no you did not cause offense at all. My reply was my very English and quirky sense of humor. We are all capable of miss reading items. Do not fear my friend or worry. I would never fall out with someone over a photograph. So put it behind us please and forget the moving on. This is quite a nice place.

Very Kindest regards

Since the haloing is happening before any editing and it's on the JPEG version... I'm inclined to think it's mechanical or the camera's jpeg settings in camera.

I see you're using Adobe RGB (1998) color space. The more universal sRGB might show some difference in the jpeg, as long as you are using sRGB in all programs including your camera color space settings.

Just a different thought...
