which camera is considered better - the Canon SX520HS or the Nikon L830 B

That would depend entirely on who was shooting them!

To compare specifics and features go to www.snapsort.com and enter in both cameras on the "Compare" page. Their final score is erratic, but its a very good place to view features side by side.

If those were my only 2 choices, I would definitely get the L830. HOWEVER, I would probably not get that either but move up to Sony CyberShot DSC-H300, or even a Canon SX50HS for their much better capabilities.

Personally, if I can't have a viewfinder and hot shoe, then I just get a 'pocket size' camera for under $150.

The best camera is the one I have I my hand at the time that a photo op presents itself. Best advice is to go and feel them in the store. One of them may feel all wrong and the other very right, if the features are up to what you want.

One more thing. I have both Canon and Nikon, I have a split personality. I own the SX-510, the previous model and I gave my brother the L820, also the previous model from what you describe. Now that I'm getting more accomplished with my DSLR, whenever I use one of these cameras, I wish they had a viewfinder. If it was me, and you could stretch a little on your budget, I would get one of the next models up with a viewfinder. In bright sun, neither one of these cameras is worth much. You might consider a refurbished Canon SX-50, always popular here at the Hog, or something new or refurbished in the P500 series from Nikon. Or, horrors of horrors, maybe another quality manufacturer like Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung....

That sounds like more than just a split personality ......more like downright schizophrenia to me ! :XD:
