Does any one know about it. Will it fit my 40d? Is it worth $180 at the pawn shop?

Any thoughts?

What is an ultrasonic lens? I have never heard the term with lenses before. Does it give foot massages if dropped into a tub of water?

It's a decent, though not overwhelming lens. It will fit pretty much any Canon DSLR made since 1987. It will have a FOV similar to that of a ~45 to ~216mm lens on a full-frame DSLR, so it will have plenty of "reach", but will not be very wide at the near end. Canon also has an EF-S 18-135 lens that is made for the APS-C sensor in your 40D that MAY be a SLIGHTLY better match. Ebay has tons of them at varying prices. $180 seems a tad high, but not out of the world.

Good luck.

PS - and "Ultrasonic" has to do with the focusing motor technology. Usually marked "USM" on lens designations from Canon. Good stuff.

Thank you, Fred, for the comment about the ultrasonic. While my foot massage comment may have been tongue in cheek my question was serious. I am a Nikon user so have never heard of ultrasonic as used with a lens.

Its a decent enough lens. Not great, but certainly not bad. Plus if you upgrade to a FF body it will work on it, unlike an EF-s lens. It a generally a good lens for vacation walk around purposes, however 28mm is not very wide. I use an EF-s 15-85mm on my Canon 60D, which by comparison, is almost panoramic. What other lenses do you have?

Right now all of my lenses are ef-s. A 50mm, 18-55, & 55-250. This lens may replace the 18-55, but don't want to lose the low end. I am beginning to think I'll hold off

Chef, when I shot with a 50D, I had a 28-135, bought used, used it for about a year, sold for nearly what I paid, bought a new 18-135 EF-S, used it for about a year, then sold it and bought another used 28-135. I wasn't crazy about the focusing on the EF-S lens, and the older 28-135 just seemed to have better color reproduction. It may have been my imagination, but that's what it seemed like to me. When I went to the 6D two years ago, I got the 24-105 L lens with it, and the 28-135 was superfluous. Ebay'ed it for very nearly what I paid. The 18-55 and 55-250 are decent enough glass, but if you ever get serious you'll probably want to upgrade. That's the thing. GOOD glass never goes out of style, and unless it's beat all to hell, you can often sell it on eBay for not a big loss. I sold my other EF-S lens (the 10-22 UWA Canon) for about 90% of what I paid for it, two years ago. Just some thoughts.

I think you will find it refers to the focusing motor in the lens. In a Canon lens it is marked as USM for Ultra Sonic Motor although their latest lens are STM which is a silent motor.

The STM stepping motor focus systems are almost completely silent and are really geared to video. They are on Canon's newer, but less expensive lenses. The STM focus motor is quiet but noticeably slower than USM. Also, while full time manual focus is supported, the focus ring only works when camera is turned on and in the the current STM lenses, it is poorly damped. There are slso no distance scales on any of these lenses, befitting their lower end fit, finish and price. Having said that, all the current STM lenses seem to give very good results at their price point. There are currently no higher end lenses with STM, and based on the current implementation of the STM motor its unlikely those who use manual focus a lot would be happy with one.

IF it is USM IS than $180 is a good price depending on condition. It is rated pretty good being an older model. I had one and liked it. I see them on Amazon and ebay for $200-225
