I am considering the purchase of a Wacum tablet - #CTH-480 to use with Elements 12. This is the small Pen & Touch model. I am a hobbyist, know the basics of Elements, but want to improve my skills. Do you recommend this model or is there another one to consider? (Price is a concern). Thank you!

I have used a tablet (G-Pen M712X) with Elements for many years and cannot imagine PP without it.
The tablet and pen allows a higher degree of precision and control than that given by a mouse. Without too much practice the pen becomes sufficiently versatile to perform any usual mouse based task; so there's no need to keep switching back and forth. In addition the G-Pen has 34 programmable keys/tabs and a scroll wheel, giving me greater functionality than a mouse.

Get it. Once you learn how to use it you will wonder how you lived without it.

Just to remove confusion, I have a tablet by Genius and not Wacum. I wanted to make the point that a tablet, by whichever manufacturer, will allow a freedom of control a mouse cannot offer.

The digitalizer of the genius tablets are not on par with the leaders WACOM.

I honestly recommend The Bamboo if someone is a beginner, and maybe a used older version of the Intous(if price is a concern).

i own the medium sized Wacom and absolutely love it!! the short cut buttons help speed up post processing and once you get used to it the pen gives you much better accuracy and control than any mouse can. I actually wish I would have bought the smaller tablet.

Wacom is the go-to brand, and there is a lot of free instruction available on YouTube.

I just replaced my Wacom Intous 4 medium tablet with the Intuos 5 Pro model and love it --- it was on sale at Adorama Photo with free priority shipping and may still be.

i sprung for the cth 480 almost a year ago (small pen and touch) intuos and it is absolutely fine for beginners. This week, I opted to upgrade to the medium intous pro as I wanted more buttons and the adjustment wheel. I wasn't sure I'd like the bigger size as it requires longer arm movements .. however I've adjusted rather quickly to the larger size and like the pro with the extra buttons and touch wheel. I can already see how this is going to speed up my workflow in lightroom and Photoshop.. There is a big difference in price with the small pen touch around $75 and the med intous pro at $309 on sale at adorama...

I'm an intous 4 medium user.
What are the improvements with the intous 5 over the 4?
did they fix the degrading paper texture?

Don't know if they fixed the degrading paper texture? wasn't aware of the issue. The intous 5 or PRO model adds express key buttons and changed the placement of the buttons to the side instead of the top and also has the touch ring, which makes it easy to change things like brush size.. there are 8 express key buttons instead of 4 so you can program in more shortcuts. It also has a better pen which doubles the pressure sensitivity from 1024 to 2048 levels
