I've had my Canon t3i about a month. After I download my pictures into the computer, the camera says I have no images to see. However the counter that shows how many pictures I can take still reflects the loss of the downloaded pictures. If I place the SD card back in the computer, the pictures are still on the card. The only way I can fully clean the card is to format the card. Is this normal?

That does sound a little unusual. If you take the card out of the camera and place it in a card reader and then copy to the computer, nothing should have changed on the card, unless the computer program is set to make a change. I know that when I transfer onto the iPad, it always asks if I want to keep or delete the photos on the card, so it is possible that the program you are using is doing something underhanded.

Once your pictures are successfully downloaded to the computer, format the card. Personally, I believe it is best to use the USB cable to download, never touch the card. Good luck.

That's a perfect title for your post. It sounds like a quantum mechanics situation. It's there, but it isn't there.

So you put the pictures onto your computer, put the card back into the camera, and the camera says there are no pictures on it. But the computer still sees the pictures.

Is this the first time you've noticed this? There's got to be a camera setting that's responsible for this. I'll be interested to hear the solution, and I know there will be a solution.

How are you getting the pictures onto the computer - card reader?

What program do you use to download? Are you doing via a cable direct from camera to computer? Have you chosen the option to delete images from card once they are downloaded? Are you looking at the counter while the camera is still connected to computer? Maybe that is the issue.

I have a T3i, as well. I remove the card, insert into a slot on my laptop, and use Picasa to download. I choose the option "leave images on card." After images are safely downloaded, I put card back into camera and select "erase all images." Sometimes I do the re-format.

Does your camera say No images or no new images? I am not sure how canon dslr cameras work but my daughter has a Canon Powershot SD1400 IS digital elph that when you download the pictures into the computer the card will still show the number of pictures taken on the card till it's reformatted.

Thanks, Linda. The slot on my computer stopped working years ago. So I tried your solution using my external card reader and then going to Picasa. It worked! I think the problem might be with the card reasder. I paid al lot for it (3.00) So I will use your solution. Have some left over turkey on me.

I get "No Images" on an empty card, "No New Images" when I insert a card that has some or all pictures that were previously transferred. But yes, in that second case there are images on it. I'm doing this with Pentax cameras.

Says NO IMAGES. I think the card reader is at fault.

Don't feel bad about that. Many people are fooled into thinking that paying a high price will get them high quality. :D

I've never really checked to see if an unformatted card with deleted photos on it will be recognized by the camera in the same way as a formatted card. However, I suspect that what you are finding is much like a hard drive on a computer when files are deleted as opposed to having the hard drive reformatted. When you delete files on a computer, the files don't actually disappear. When they are deleted, the space on the hard drive in which they're located becomes available to be written over. This is the reason that when files are inadvertently deleted, they can sometimes be recovered with the appropriate software. However, if you use the computer a lot and overwrite the space where the files are located, the files can't be recovered. By way of saying, it may be that the files have been deleted from your card by your computer but the camera still recognizes the used space. In essence, your camera is not in sync with your computer. I don't see any real problem resulting from this unless you're really bothered by the number of photos your camera says you can take. Personally, I have always reformatted my memory card after downloading the photos. I remember reading years ago that it's best to reformat the card anyway.
