Living in FL, which is the lightning capital of the US I thought about a early present for myself.

In looking at various triggers the MIOPS, formerly Nero looks the best. The have a $30 discount so I decided to try it.

Any advice?

Thanks

I have 5 different brands of lightning triggers in the store and have found they all work extremely and equally well. The only real difference is in the packaging, some just look cooler than others. Some also add motion triggers and sound triggers to the package, but that also adds to the price.

Florida isn't the "lighting capital" of the United States. :D

It's got to be frustrating trying to get lightning pictures using a sound trigger. :D

Sound trigger will only work if your the object being struck... :-)

And in that case the motion trigger would probably do the job as well! ;-)

I poured through the reviews and the choices. MIOPS has a decent return program and 30$ off. Going to give that one a whirl.

Thanks.

WeatherBug has a "Spark Alert" that tells you how far away lightning is.

I have a lightning trigger by AEO. Works quite well, as apparently they all do. There is a bit of a learning curve though. Be prepared to spend some time learning how to set it up for sensitivity. First thing I had to do was take a piece of cardboard tube to cut down its field of view. You have to balance that against its sensitivity to keep it from triggering on lightning strikes off to the side and even behind you. Be careful where you set up. No point having a picture of your smoking remains on the evening news! I have braced my tripod in my pickup with the camera pointing out either a side window or the sliding rear window so that I can park where I want and still be relatively safe. Plus I can close the window in a hurry if the wind shifts the rain.

There are a range of prices, due to a range of options and capabilities. I would suggest you check online at B&H or Adorama. You could also send a pm to MT Shooter. He sells them in his camera store. Good guy to deal with.
As far as ease of use, once you get the sensitivity dialed in and your camera settings where you want them, you just sit back and wait for Mother Nature to do her thing. Bring a book to read!
Never had a problem so I never used customer service.

Just went out and took a couple of photos. Nothing fancy about it. I have an extended cab GMC Sierra. The back seat folds up. I just adjust the tripod legs till it sits where I want it. The rear window is a powered slider. Can open and close it from the driver's seat. The 1st shot shows how I place the tripod. (Don't mind the dust on the seat. No one has ever sat on it!). The 2nd shot shows the field of view. Even at 35mm only a little of the tonneau cover shows up at the bottom of the photo. The camera and I stay dry and comfortable. The setup works, but so far my luck hasn't! No shots to be proud of. Yet! Next year's thunderstorm season will be different!
