First let me say I know I watch too much tv. When they show criminalist taking pictures of bodies and other things there is always a wide white "thing" around the end of the lens. Does anyone know what that is and what the purpose is?
Macro photography ring flash, to keep shadows to a minimum.

The ring flash began life as a tool for dentists to photograph teeth. It expanded to much use as a scientific photography tool for even shadowless light which explains it's use for crime scene photography.
Indeed the ring flash.... a great tool. The LED type are not expensive. Go to search at top of this page and type "ring flash" and you will find a full days reading. Well covered in UHH forums.
Truth in Humor: For long lenses on super-zoom P&S it is best to have a red ring around the end to tell the world that that extended lens is not a weapon!!
Thank you all for your answers. Really interesting.

Yes, these days you can never be too careful when aiming anything toward the police. Better to take a selfie when around the police.

Yes, Ring Light. Flash / Strobe $$ or LED / On Steady Light $.
For even shadowless lighting of small(er) objects -- great for evidence, scientific or product photography. Can be fun for general photography too, but often shadows and modeling add drama and interest to artistic photography. Some ring systems can be adjust to give different effects and there are other flash accessories for dramatic macro and close-up lighting.
You probably do watch too much CSI, NCIS, and Law & Order, etc. I certainly do!
