Stereo viewing

This is a request for user feedback on 3D images.

My project is a geology website about some volcanoes in Mexico. 3D images have more information than flat images but viewing them is not trivial. Who among us, for instance, has one of those nifty new 3D monitors? The best way to avoid red-green glasses and retain the colors of the original scene is to post cross-eyed stereo pairs but this requires the user to perform an “unnatural act” that may be uncomfortable or impossible.

The third dimension is so important to understanding some of these fiendishly complex volcanoes that I may use it anyway but I would like to know what other people think.

Here is a link to the test page on my website, the images are displayed in a variant of lightbox and cannot be posted here.

I went to your web site and immediately found a dead link...

It sends the surfer to http://www.pinacate.org/www.pinacate.org instead of http://www.pinacate.org ????

Easy fix, if you have access to the coding.

Anyway, I did a quick search to find reviews on 3d monitors/tv

What I found:

Passive monitors that use a polarizing screen are deemed superior at the moment EVEN if forced to wear dorky glasses.

The active 3d Screen flicker the image from left to right (not sure about the frequency - could cause headaches and worse trigger a epilepsy crisis). The active screen suffer from poor resolution and sharpness, this may change over time.

The site for cross eyed 3d, well, interesting but frankly unless you want to really strain your eyes and end up with problem, that is not a solution at all.

Beside the 3D option, have you considered panoramic images? These work well for any subject from landscape to macro. Software like PTGUI offer 'how spots' that lead to either a HTML page, a picture, a video or another panorama. The final result can be really sharp. I posted an example of relatively large unfinished panorama on UHH here: http://vigneron.us/Panoramas/Set%20001%20Set%20002%20Set%20003%20and%20Set%20004%20Large.jpg

Just a suggestion...

Curious - when I got the e-mail about a reply and clicked on it, the UglyHH thread page came up. I clicked on the link in my message and it worked.

I opened Chrome and the links worked there, too.

In any case, stereo monitors may eventually take over the world but they're small beer right now. I need to get information to my readers. What do you think of the stereos?

I think (know) this article is much more informed than I am.

http://www.planar3d.com/3d-technology/3d-technologies/

The pros and cons are well defined.

As to the future? Who knows, this is like other new technology (limitless, variable depth of field cameras by example) are in their infancy. There maybe also a battle of standard, leaving the best out because of a standardization based on mass market retail... (8 track tapes vs. stereo cassettes, betamax vs VHS)

I was able to easily access your 3D website, and I sent an e-mail feedback.

I haven't looked at your site yet but one think comes to mind, these new monitor's only show 3 D in animation form such as you see in black op's or other very sophisticated games, they do not show true life video.
And you still wear goggles.
