Governments had the ability to remotely monitor *live* what is on your computer since the early 80's ~ so what's the big deal about this?

Ah, but the difference is, in the early 80's, they did not need to install anything on your computer - and anti-virus packages were not around yet...

They could remotely read the data stream to the monitors. The only way to stop them was to have your system in a tempest secure room.

With the 30+ years to improve their technology, I would like to know what their true capabilities are today. Guess we'll learn in another 30 years :)
