I wouldn't switch from my 400 to the 24-70. For plays coming right at me, my 70-200 is normally OK to get the shot. My 24-70 is usually for capturing player and coach emotions at the sidelines, and that sort of thing, or for groups shots, or homecoming queens, etc.. Your 18-300 is fine for daytime, but for night football, for example, it would be difficult to get a fast enough shutter speed to capture moving players. I don't do video, so dunno about that.

No argument: 18-300 is a daylight lens. Altho "back in the day" I used to shoot sideline at Dolphin and Hurricane games (with Nikon F and 180/2.8 and Nikkormat 50/1.4), I moved to Ocala and shot high school football for several years. For that I used a D2x and 70-200/2.8 and D90 with Sigma 24-70/2.8. I currently use a D7100 with AF-S 300/2.8 on a gitzo monopod (That's as much as I want to handle during a game).

I carry a D800 and a D810. I usually mount my 70-200 on the D810 and 24-70 on the D800. I tend to use these lenses the most. I also carry the SX60HS and RX100 just in case.

Do any of you carry two camera bodies that use the same lenses and if so how do you use them? Thinking of getting a second camera body and leaving my 75 to 300 lens attached. Currently shooting with an Olympus OMD EM10. I like this system to keep the weight down and wonder if carrying another body would defeat the purpose.

Standard kit is a D4/D4S and a D800, one fitted with the lens I plan using the most, the second usually the D800 fitted with a 17-35 or 24-70 as that is what I usually end up seeing a shot for.

Travelling having a second body with you can be a trip saver. Unreliability or equipment failure seems to increase disproportionately with the distance travelled from home and support.

What about the Cotton Carrier for carrying two cameras? I've been thinking about them, but I believe they use some sort of plate that attaches to the tripod mount to connect the camera to their system. I typically carry my cameras with a quick release plate already attached for use with my tripod. So, does that interfere with their use?
