I am looking at getting a new dslr. I have some background in the field as my ex-wife had her own Portrait business. I however am looking at more of a camera for the outdoors. I have been told by many to buy once and not buy again like many things I have bought before. So if you were me looking to get a full frame DSLR what are your opinions of the Nikon D610? And another question is can I really get quality pics from a smaller size sensor while shooting raw pics? Just asking as I am just getting into this and seeing pics that people I know are just amazing! In fact two of them have had to water mark so they are not stolen anymore. ?? Looking for advice from the group of experienced folks on here vs the proverbial out house lawyer. Guys and women that are more experienced at this than me please give me some input. I do not want to just buy a camera based on a few quality recommendations, but from people that are better than I am and been in my situation. Bob.

Welcome to UHH. Your budget will be the key factor in what camera and lenses to purchase. If you can afford an FX camera that's great. The next choice will be lenses and that should be determined but the type of outdoor shots you wish to make and, again, your budget. The D610 is a fine camera from what I have heard. People also like the D750. I like the D810. Watermarks won't stop someone from stealing your photographs if they want them bad enough. A small obscure watermark will deter some would-be thief but not everyone. I recommend shooting raw because you capture a greater dynamic range of colors and you can edit them to a greater degree in post processing. Within the UHH participants, you will find a great range of talent, experience and knowledge that you can draw upon. One of the things I suggest is for you to explore the some 23 forums within UHH. Another is to make good use of the search function. I wish you good luck.

Welcome to the HOG - Enjoy.
You can get an equally quality photograph/print from a smaller size sensor to that of a full frame.
For example, the growth in the CSC format is growing daily and quite a few professional photographs (me) have bought into.
You state that your requirement is for outdoor, so you need to consider and look at lenses first.
Look at all manufacturers before you decide.
I wish you luck in whatever you decide.

Welcome to the UHH! All good advice from above. Put some camera's in your hands and see if they fit you. DX or FX, both are great!

Welcome! You will receive much good advice on the site.

I've owned the D610 for over a year and can tell you that I am quite pleased with it. It certainly provides more functionality than I will likely take advantage of.

The 610 is a great camera...but overall, you can go smaller and less expensive and still get great camera.

My personal favorite is the EM1...but I'm a bit biased.

Seems as though the builders of camera bodies go back and forth as to who is best from generation to generation which spawns innovation. That being said, personally if I was new I would build my system around the quality of glass I needed and could afford now and in the future as the bodies are really like computers that to most will reach a state of obsolescence. Quality glass will be the greatest cost and most enduring portion of your investment.

While I have always been looking to take better pictures and learn from others that are good or at least better than me I do believe I will take some time to digest all of what the forum has to offer. I am new at the equipment end of the deal. As far as the lenses I do realize there is some that are made for the intended use and I kinda need one for what I need. When I started off with a body I was just looking for something that I can not have to go back and upgrade. I do want to start off with a full frame so I don't want to have to go back and have a do over on that end. The advice I have had from one of the two people I know that take some of the most amazing stuff I have seen have different opinions. One is younger and learned his desire to do this from the other one. The older one told me he cannot offer any advice on the body as things have changed so much in the last two years.( He told me he keeps shooting his Olympus albiet outdated) The younger one told me the other cannot do what he can do because he is using the stuff he has had for a while. I believe they have both agreed but in different ways. Just wanting to buy a solid full-frame body and get my lenses a piece at a time. I know some will say this is backwards but I tend to do stuff that way. Thank you to all and I will send some PM's when I get a tad more educated on the entire DSLR thing. Currently I have gotten some good pics out of the stuff I put in my pack like the Sony RX100 and my Panasonic Lumix for a point and shoot cameras. Gracias folks! Gonna take a little bit of time and do my research before asking anymore questions. I do not want to sound stupid when I ask anyone a question regarding a new DSLR. Bob.
