Stock Certificates

I'm not into buying stocks, but I saw something on two TV shows recently, so here's a question.

Are stock certificates still given to buyers of stock? On two recent TV shows, after a person was murdered, the detectives and relatives went to a lot of trouble to find the stock certificates of the victims. I thought that was all electronic now, what with people buying and selling in microseconds.

I still receive them with JNJ. Always have liked having them, but they are an endangered species in the electronic age.

Gerry - stocks are generally held in trust by the Depository Trust and Clearing Company in the name Cede & Company. This is done to facilitate on-line trading and for other reasons. ;) No certificates are issued unless specifically requested. One may ask if ownership rights are ceded. It does allow the Merrill Lynches of the world to do transactions on a statement basis.

Here is a link that will explain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depository_Trust_%26_Clearing_Corporation

Almost all stocks are held by the broker, but you can ask for delivery. In that case, you can get a physical certificate.

I should have clarified.......the stock is held "electronically" by the broker, not physically.

It's amazing how that business has changed. Computers now buy and sell stocks in fractions of seconds to make the most of whatever profit they can. They decide what to buy and sell and when to do it.

I accepted an offer to buy a couple of shares of GoPro and Alibaba, and they've both gone up tremendously, but even if they turn out to be worthless, I have almost no money invested. I'm not a gambler.

I had a temp job one time and got to look at a very large number of different stock certificates. Thought I might enjoy collecting old cancelled certificates. I didn't find a lot available and what I found, I thought they were a little pricey (for me).
That collection never got off the ground.
I'm sure these certificates are still held in trust, unless cashed.
