This is my first time to see this pretty colourful beetle and what I believe to be an assassin bug.

The first two appear to be a Katydid nymph and are well done. The Beetle shot is Outstanding!!!!!

Those are great! What power setting are you using for your flash?

Hi Bill, thought you might be interested in seeing the original. I used speedlight and diffuser but couldn't get the iridescent colours of the beetle. It has been changed from raw to JPG.

Hi Kervin, Thanks, I usually start with 1/8 and work from there. For both of these insects I used, I think, 1/2 power because both were in dark places but having said that I did lighten the beetle a lot in pp. It was a pretty beetle and I don't feel I did justice to its colours. If I find it again I will have another go and use the speedlight off the camera and differ the settings.

Brenda, I made a few simple adjustments to first image you posted just to point out to anyone that may be interested.
Yes, we need to learn to develop our images as well as learn to use our cameras in order to get the best from our photos.

EDIT: This image seemed to look different/better before I posted it here.

Yes, it may be easier to get the correct colors from this one...maybe. Your original file you just posted seems to show more true color of the beetle. I didn't intend on spending much time or doing many adjustments, I only wanted to "attempt" to illustrate how a few simple tweaks can get a little more out of our images.
I looked up images to compare colors.

Hi Bill, You have done a much better job than I. Thank you for taking the trouble to do this, I really appreciate it. I have noted your pp changes and will work again on my original. There is a lot to this photography lark isn't there? I always love your photos by the way.
Edit. You have made the colours of the leaves and background much truer as well. I like this.

I will look again for this beetle with the intention of getting better lighting.

I did some work on your second original. I had to use a slightly different approach, but I think it turned out ok for the few minutes I spent on it. I might be able to do more by spending more time but, that's not the point. The second untouched original is better than the first processed one....IMHO.
Better than the first one I think. The slight crop was only to cut down on all the bright white background.

I can't make up my mind which I prefer, the first is lighter and the second perhaps more correct but you have done a good job on both. I need to study pp more, as well as lighting, as well as. :)

I love your photos. Focus is superb. Is that an aphid below the katydid? It is also in good focus. Next thing you know, Douglass will be putting you on his list of great photographers.

Thanks Dennis, yes it is a Oleandar aphid which is the one you may find on your Milkweed plants and others plants. This katydid was so small I didn't recognise it as one until Bill told me. As for the listing, maybe in another 100 years or so.
