Like most wildlife, if you approach them they will go away, but if you sit still, they will usually come close.
These birds flew from across the lake to 100 yds. down the shore from where I was stationed waiting and watching for Bald Eagles. As they fed in the shadows of the overhanging branches, they came closer and closer. I watched and could see them moving in and out of the shadows, feeding as they moved along the shore toward me. I tilted the camera down to where I thought they would come into the open for some pics. They finally came within 10-ft of me. I thought it might be too close for the 100-400mm lens on my camera, but I didn't want to make any unecessary movement to scare them. Mallards are common in city parks and are quite aproachable, but in the wilds, they are wary.
These are some shots I got as they fed along their way. Enjoy them. Comments welcome.

:-) Thank you, Jan. Glad you like 'em. Thanks for looking and the thumb-up.
How beautiful these are, Gene! Although the male is more colorful, I love the female in the first one swimming among the leaves. Such a perfect picture of fall.

:D Thank you! They offer photo ops each time I'm there waiting for the eagles, but today I decided to shoot something while hanging around. Glad you like these. Thanks for looking and commenting.
Beautiful and well composed
Beautiful, Gene! The leaves add interest, and that blue - wowsa. So clear, you can easily see their feet. Neat shots!

:D Thank you, Linda. That end of the lake is a bog and the water is shallow. It gets overgrown with water lillies in summer. Many of the ducks that fly in feed there. Glad you like these. Appreciate you looking and commenting.
Nice clear shots of beautiful birds!
Well done Gene, I also like the BG!!!
