If you put them in a place where the are forgotten for extended periods of time, this is what happens.
It started out in life as a reed diffuser but it had been hiding for so long there was nothing left but dust.
I tried some backlighting but that lantern ran out of fuel a loooong time ago. :-)
Just messing around after cleaning up.

Like your clean ups Mike. The lantern really adds to the shot!

It's rustic southeastern Colorado art deco Erv. A while back my wife and I bought 7000 square feet of headache and building #2 had been a lumber yard for many years and had a bunch of cool stuff in it. There are 6 of those old lanterns hanging off of the front porch.
On the upside, we have pulled enough scrap metal out of that building to cover the purchase price and since the buildings sit on a railroad right-of-way, the "property taxes" are absurdly cheap since (technically speaking) there is no real property involved.
I just had a brain storm (fart?). Wouldn't it be awesome to wire in some LED's with a small solar panel? Hmmm, something to ponder.

I have over 60 oil lanterns now. I love to light them when ever I can. They are making solar powered ones now for camping. Sounds like my kind of place Mike. Janny and I are moving to the country when I can retire. About 2-3 years and I will be free.:)

I wish you luck in finding that special place Erv. We haven't lived in a "City" for over 16 years. I can't imagine that kind of life anymore.
These days it's a 45 minute ride to civilization and there are times when this is inconvenient but it also cuts down on impulse and unnecessary spending.

We are still kind of in the country. But it is closing in fast. And the folks that are coming in are a different breed. It isn't the same place we moved to 40 years ago.:)

Isn't that the truth. I hate moving but sometimes you have to. I think we'll stay put and try for a little getaway cabin in the mountains when we can afford it.
Thanks Warrior, to say that we live in a dusty place is an obvious understatement but it screamed for a photo op just before it hit the trash can.
