#3 would imply that you are shooting raw although you may be able to do a little with jpg. The rationale - you can't recover much if anything from blown out whites. On the other hand, there are a lot of details in the shadows which can be pulled out in post.

Not at all. I shoot jpg exclusively.

When I say "add light" to the shadows I mean in real time; via flash or reflector.

I'm not a fan of fixing tons of things in post.

(Though a lot can be done with jpgs too, more than folks imply here on the hog.)

Most of us try to get things as close to "correct" as possible. But as hard as we try, stuff happens and we need tickle the ivories in post. I was much like yourself some time back and then I tried raw. You get 12-14 bits of color and I found much higher quality in raw to jpg. In addition a lot more room to maneuver in post. And when I wan to do some serious print quality, I want Tiff.

For instance, you forget to set white balance or you have some odd combination, you can spend mucho time trying a custom setting while the shot passes you by, or not care, shoot raw, and dial your photo to what ever Kelvin works.

I enjoy the higher quality and doesn't take much more time to process raw than jpg.

Each to their own.

Thanks for all the answers, I have been away from the computer for a while, but I have only just started to shoot RAW / JPG and have not had any experience with processing either. So back to the camera with a new perspective and see if I can eliminate some of the photo shopping. Looks like an off camera flash might be on the next shopping list.
