Looking for a telephoto lens for a Nikon 7000. Does anyone have any experience with the Sigma 150-500? Other recommendations? DMF

The Tamron 150-600mm is significantly better, though it costs $200 more. The extra cost is probably well worth it.

Everything on my flikr site was taken with this lens. Of course I was using a Canon T2i (entry level camera) & results might vary depending on lighting, tripod use, etc. These were all taken hand held.

Sigma is on the way with a 150-600 very soon...
Thank you, this helps. As I am not familiar with either Tamron or Sigma, I do not know what performance I can expect from either. DMF

The single biggest advantage of the 150-600mm lenses will be that they are sharp out to about 550mm. The 150-500mm is sharp out to about 450mm.
Should I typically expect one brand have better performance or does it vary by lens type? DMF
I personally can attest to the SigZilla 150-600 Sport and it is sharp to 600. I've only had it a week and it is an expensive, BIG, lens.
DMF, with a D7000 I feel the Bigma 150-500 will suit you quite well. You will really like the reach and the price is right,...Plus on a DX body it's the equivalent of a750mm if I understand the math correctly.
In deed. I am not familiar with either brand, will spend some time researching. Thanks, DMF

my wife and i have the sigma 150-500 and the tamron 150-600 i like the tamron she likes the sigma better , so thats just in the same household lol
both lens have their limits mostly in low light and we have some great bird photos with both lens , if you are shooting in low light give them both a miss and go for a prime f2.8 or f4 depending on budget
Shot with the SIGMA 150-500mm... The camera used is the entry level (discontinued) Canon T-3 aka:1100D. Ordered the D7 mark II waiting for Canon to ship. Should be able to get better pictures for sure? Shooting with the T-3, I shot on manual and one shot at a time. Can't wait for the D7 to arrive, hockey season, YES!

You can get a 150-500 reasonably cheap now since the newer lenses have and are coming out. the 150-500 isn't a bad lens though...
DMJ,
The Sigma is a fantastic lens, you won't be sorry!!

Never had a go at the Tamron but I've had my Sigma for a few years now and I've never had trouble at the long end like some keep going on about...I find the IQ pretty much OK at all lengths...

I suggest you pm MT Shooter. He is very familiar with that lens and would probably be happy to sell you one. You can rely on what he tells you.
