Hi, Hoggers. Question about my new Nikon D5300. Shooting raw + jpeg-fine, I seem to be getting barely 100 shots per fully charged battery -- far from the 4-500 I have seen advertised. (I do use live-view.) What kind of battery life do you get for that camera? Thanks for the help!
On my 5300 I've never run out, even after 400 or more photo's. I don't use live view, I don't use the GPS, I don't use the WiFi. All those are battery eaters.

Using the built-in flash seems to eat up a lot of battery.
Like Bill H. above I don't use live view, I don't use the GPS, I don't use the WiFi. All those are battery eaters.
However, on trips to Europe and Alaska this summer I did have to put in a spare battery somewhere between 500 and 600 images. I shoot RAW+fine and do quite a bit of bracketing. I am pretty amazed at the battery life of the EN-EL14a.
BTW, the "new, improved" EN-EL14a does actually perform longer than the EN-EL14. My spares are EN-EL14 from my broken D5100 and I only get 400 or so images from them in the D5300.
As a previous post states, live view really eats up the battery. If you are going to shoot live view over the course of a day you had better have more than one battery with you.
I've gotten 3rd party batteries for my D5200 from both ebay and Amazon, they're cheap and they work fine. They charge OK in the Nikon charger. I hardly ever need them, but it's good to know I have them just in case. In Live View, you can turn the brightness down, that might help some. I usually use the viewfinder and only check pictures after I've taken them. I do use Live View on a tripod when I'm doing HDR. I'm sure my battery runs down quicker under those conditions.

Battery life is calculated shooting Raw and shooting through the viewfinder. Raw + Jpg requires extra processing, Liveview requires more battery plus live view doesn't power off after viewing the shot so it continues to use battery. If you want the battery life advertised then you have to shoot in the conditions Nikon, Canon or anyone else measures the life. Its like saying the car gets 30 miles to the gallon.. sure it does, on flat level ground with no head wind and a steady foot on the gas or with the cruise control on. That said, I get 700 shots on a battery maybe more on my D7100 shooting raw (only) and using the view finder and with my pic review set to near the shortest time. I go back and review shots but only to verify exposure. Its digital so I can take 5 or 6 of each scene... or more. plus I carry spare batteries. They are fairly cheap in the grand scheme of things. Plus I use genuine Nikon batteries.. the only 3rd party batteries I've had tend to be about 1/3 shorter in shot life.
I consistently get around 500 or more shots with factory battery. Live view is a huge drain, so I only use it when necessary. I shoot either RAW or JPEG fine, or both together, and the built in flash when needed. Having a second battery charged up and ready to go makes it easy. Not too many days with over 1,000 clicks. D5300 is an amazing camera.

YES YES the EN-EL14a battery lasted at least twice as long as the EN-EL14 in my D5300.

I can take over 200 pictures; RAW, JPEG, RAW+JPEG, not much difference. I try to avoid using Live View, and I have never turned on the WiFi function. (I use an EyeFi Card.)
