Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 vs Sigma 24-50mm 2.8

I need an opinion on which lens give sharper focus. I have a canon 70D and need a good low light lens. I shoot family gathering and landscapes mostly. I have a canon 40mm f2.8 but need longer reach sometimes. I checked the Tamron at a local camera shop. It seemed to be soft in its sharpness. They do not handle Sigma, some Hogs speak well of Sigma, and many like the Tamron. Any advice is welcomed and needed. Thanks for taking time to advise.

Hello Duaneweir
My opinion of of lenses made by other companies is it's just not all that good as opposed to original manufacturer lenses plain and simple, the quality of those others is not consistent some work ok for the folks that
Use them. Back in the film days I also bought a few of them my thinking was I will save money and it will be ok but the sharpness was just not the same? I have been a Canon user for more than fifty years I feel Canon makes the best lenses for their own products I have never had a bad lens yet period! Yes you pay more for original equipment manufacturer products but it's worth it in the long run. And yes some of photographers get lucky and with Sigma Tamron and others? But in the end of things it's your choice good luck with what ever you decide to do!

Thanks Richard, I agree but the cost difference is something that sure makes one think. I just may need to wait awhile longer. Thanks again for your reply.

You can also resell them at a much higher price for the most part.

The new Sigma lenses are as good as or better than their brand name counter parts at a much lower price.

You should look at the Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG (OS)* HSM | A as well.

First off, if a 40mm lens won't " reach" for you, then a 50mm won't either and probably a 70mm won't either. I'll suggest a lens in the 100 to 150mm range. Pick a zoom range to compliment the lens(es) that you have, THEN decide on a brand.

Good luck

I have an 85mm 1.8 that is made by Canon for my 5D. Price is not bad and low light situations are very good to excellent. Use it on my Rebel too, also works well on cropped canons.

Thanks Wickspics, but I am thinking more along the zoom type of feature in smaller shooting areas. Such as from a small room to a larger conference type of setting. Thanks for your imput.

I shoot the Tamron on a Nikon. I use it exclusively for portrait and model work; I carried it around one day to see if I would use it for landscapes; it's heavy! Too heavy to lug around all day long. I understand why it's heavy and all of that, but it's tiring after a while.

I must be getting old.

I have the tamron 24-70mm and just purchased the 70-200mm ..I absolutely love these 2 lenses and use them on my nikon d7000 and d700..my other 3 lenses are nikon lenses ..I m not saying that they are better but in all honesty I really don't see a difference ..the quality will amaze you..why not try them first and compare...
