I lit a log in the fireplace tonight and decided to get the camera out. One thing I found out is that it is not easy trying to capture dancing flames using only natural light from the fire. Maybe I'll have to find some wood that burns hotter to get the light I need without upping my ISO over 800 so I can get a fast enough shutter speed. Anyway, I took over 200 pics of these flames and hope to turn this into a screen saver via time lapse photography.

Not bad for a first time. It is a very trick thing to photograph. I should know. Good luck and I hope you get it to work.

Thank you. I later through on some old pine trim wood that burned a lot hotter. Too bad it was small stuff and didn't last long enough to get some good pics. I'll keep trying though.

I will keep watching to see how you come with it. I wish you luck as it is not an easy subject to photograph.

Try some white birch - it's very colorful!

Toss in a couple short strips of copper wire to create some pretty green, blue and orange flames.

Ummm, we're talking about my fireplace here, not a fire pit. We used to put copper wire in the fire pit while camping. Now copper is worth too much for that.

It was just a suggestion. If you think it would hurt your fireplace or you can't afford it I would make another suggestion and that is - don't do it.

Mesquite is a hard wood and burns a long time, smells nice to. I don't know about the colors I just use when I bar-b-que. I think there is mesquite in Arkansas, isn't there?

But I was just trying to shoot the log and the flames. I think the fill flash would also light up the back of the fireplace which I really don't want. It is an idea I will experiment with next time though. I can turn the flash down -3 stops so it wouldn't be so bright.
