Looking to help a friend find a P&S+
I have a friend at work that is looking for camera better than an iPhone but not as large and expensive as a DSLR.
Brand isn't important. Does not have to be pocket sized. Price preferred around $300-500, but could go higher.
Features - probably not a removable lens, RWR capability, Image Stabilization, would like manual (vs motorized) zoom , reasonable zoom coverage (~ 24 - 150mm equivalent), good low ISO capability.
I showed him my Canon EOS M, and he liked it, but is hesitant about removable lenses. I am hesitant about recommending a discontinued camera (however I love my EOS M, esp for $300 with 22mm/f2.0 lens).
Thanks for any suggestions and insight,
Jim
the Nicon AW120 is W/P and has alot of dif.settings.Cannon also has a nice selection.all for about $300.00 and less.

The venerable Canon SX50 gets a lot of positive feedback in the press and here at UHH.
Fuji x30
Olympus xz-2 (you can get a refurb for 239
I have a Nikon P7800 that I love. It has a very sharp 28-200 f/2-4 lens, a 1/1.7 in sensor, a hot shoe, and an EVF (electronic viewfinder). It will fit in a jacket or cargo pants pocket or a belt case. It cost around $550 new, but refurbished ones can be had for under $400.
I also have a Panasonic LF-1 compact. It has a Leica 28-200 f/2-5.9 lens, a 1/1.7 inch sensor, and an EVF but no hot shoe. The P7800 is the better camera, but the LF-1 is much smaller. It will fit in a shirt pocket. It's also less expensive at around $300 new.
There are a lot of cameras that fall in that price range. Sony makes several. I have an HX400 which has a 50x optical zoom. The 35mm equivalent is 24-1200mm. It's a Zeiss f/2.8 lens. A lot of the bridge cameras offer some of the same controls of DSLRs. My only complaint is they have an electronic viewfinder. Once you press the shutter release, it takes several seconds for the view to return.
I never really understand posts like this!
Seems the OP is in bit of a hard place.
What does his friend want to photo that his iPhone isn't good enough? My first inclination was to write - get a better iPhone. Sounds to me that the friend is suffering from GAS!
Guess we don't know enough about the OP's position and friend!
If your friend isn't really sure about a camera vs phone, so the least cost route. Fuji makes a variety of bridge cameras with enough feature variation to give you some fun shopping. I still use my S1500 that I bought in 2009 and it was an old model then. It and its cousins can be found new for $99 on up. Go cheap, have fun and learn what you really want before you plunk down the big bucks.

Yeah I know, I was PWF again but there was nothing else around, unless you count that KC-135.

I just traded in a Nikon Coolpix P7000 p&s for its more recent brother the Coolpix P7800 and have been very pleased with both performance and features. My P7800 was refubished and re calibrated by Nikon factory technicians and it cost me less than $450. I will try to post a recent picture from the P7800. /Ralph
I am a big fan of Olympus cameras; I have owned several; now have three. My wealk around camera is the newer Stylus one SP 820 UZ. Its big feature is the 40X zoom. It is a P&S, but it has a plethera of programs to cover any situation.
I think it may be discontinued now, but I think they have a newer version that has 50 X zoom. Go to the OLYMPUS website and you can see the entire line up.
Don't over look the reconditioned ones. My 820 is as good as any new one.
as I recall, it cost around $300, including a case and a tiny tripod.

Canon SX50 if you want super zoom (24-1200). Canon S120 if 24-120 zoom is sufficient. You will have trouble finding a manual zoom in that price range.
There is the Nikon 6800 Coolpix it runs around $179.00, & its good it has 2 filter effects, color selective where you take a photo of a person or an object & the subject is in red & everything else is in B & W, but the person or object is the only one in color or whatever color, & mirror effect where the person or subject shows a double image.
also it has a good zoom from 28 to about 300, as well as a CMOS feature that you can take good photos in low light without flash, as well as a good ISO range too.
then there are several Canon model's that sell close to $300.00 that have good zoom lenses, & some of the wide angles go from 24 to 300 or 350 zoom, that's good for a pocket zoom, & also note that canon point & shoots have at least a Digic 5 or 6 on its high end zooms for better low light shooting
so its you choice, theres also sony & Olympus, you'll have to check your A-List camera stores, or the net to really find what you are looking for.

Photo was shot in Nikon's NRW (Raw) format. ISO=80, f/2.2, EV=0, Shutter 1/1250. Processing was done in Apple iPhoto on my MacBook Pro. I'm pleased that you like it. Our default weather this time of year is often overcast, damp and windy, but this was shot on one of the rare sunny, temperate days. /Ralph
Panasonic DMZ series. Mine went to 20 zoom and had fabulous pictures. Got some really great architecture pictures in Italy with it last year. Bought it at Costco for around 300.00. Will get another to use as a backup when I travel.
Good luck
