So why would the IQ be so bad in LV on a D810 that one wouldn't be able to tell whether the scene is in focus?

I'm not sure the reports are accurate. That is, under comparable conditions, including same f stop, manual focusing might be very difficult for any camera. With my D750, which is supposed to have equal or better Live View than D810, I can see the problem in very low light. Lots of noise, even at f4. I'd say accurate focusing is challenging then, not impossible. In comparable light my little Sony DSC HX9V, which is a very good 16 Mb point and shoot, had even more noise. So I question the Olympus P&S story in the original post.

After long and hard thoughts about buying the D750 or the D810 I decided that I will purchase the D810 just for the crop factor and being able to switch from Full frame to DX, this way my old always Reliable D700 will be my Trusty Back Up camera when needed! Plus I mainly do landscape photography and seen some really interesting You Tube videos about the D810, and I have not really ever used the Live View. Good Luck to all that have been on the fence as I Have!
