Would anyone have thoughts good or bad about wide angle lenses other than canon, with or without is.
Normally, on wide angle lenses, you can do without VR or VC on whatever brand you are buying.
Two very good and reasonably priced ultrawides are the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 HSM and Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. If you do much low light shooting the 11-16 f/2.8 is a good choice.
I know that you are looking for non canon lens BUT. I just bought the canon 10-18 for 350 bucks and love it.
Tokina is an excellent wide angle lens I have the older 10-17 mm lens

I have the same lens and love it. Two notes about it though. 1. it is for DX(cropped only) Fx (full frame) has to use it in cropped mode. 2. at the 10 mm it tends to fisheye just a tiny bit where the Nikon 10-24 is absolutely flat across the zoom.
Having said that I love my Tamron 10-24 which was half the price of the Nikon and (as long as I keep that 10mm issue in mind when I shoot) works great. It even close focuses and I love it for shooting flowers and insects up close...
I don't know if it is the lens or the stabilization, or both, making the difference, but I sold my EF 17-40mm f/4 L, which has no IS, and bought the EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS a few months ago and I can definitely see an improvement in many of my shots. Especially in the low-light shots possible with my 6D. I my usage I doubt that IS makes much difference in good light and high shutter speed on a wide angle, but it sure seems to in low-light.

Unless you are doing street work esspecially at night, in which case it can give you a couple stops.
I love my Tokina 11-16 mm 2.8 lens. Very crisp images. No image stabilization, but not needed.

I also have the 10-18 and love it. However, we do not know if the OP is using an APS-C camera or a FF. The 10-18 and the Sigma 18-35 are both APS-C lenses. It is another case of not enough information in the original post.

To the Sigma 10-20 and the Tamron 11-16, I would add the Sigma 8-16.

Try getting used Canon 10-22 if you have cropped sensor.
