Losing sharpness

I am doing some work for a colleague, shooting live scorpions. They sit still long enough to perform a z-series of about 10 shots. However, when I look at the stack at 100%, the fine bristles look a little fuzzy. At first I thought it might be a problem with circular diffraction, since I was shooting at high f stops, but I still see it at f11.
Anyone out there with suggestions? Thanks

If you are focus-stacking, you should be using the optimum aperture for your particular lens. This is usually 2-stops down from wide-open.

Which lens (mfr & focal length), and which aperture did you try?

P.S. - The proper term is small or large aperture, not high or low f/stop.

My aperture of choice for focus stacking is f/8. If you pay attention to focal plane, you should be able to get a decent stack with ten images. It's hard to say without seeing a posted image with "store original" checked.

Small aperture diffraction & circular diffraction are the same phenomenon:
FAQ: Why are my Digital Images Sharper at f/8 than f/22?
