I am thinking of purchasing a Canon 70D but I also need to upgrade my computer. I want to make sure I the new computer has the right programs and enough memory to support the camera. Any suggestions?

Use the UHH search function for recommendations on photo processing computer specs. The simple programs for downloading photos to your computer for both JPEG and RAW files are included in the disk you get with the camera. Depending on your amount of programs, the OS, photo PP program processing and the amount of photos you intend to store, storage space may be of concern with HDDs under 500 gig and external backup drive considered as well.

i5 or i7 CPU. 8GB System Ram minimum, 16 GB would be better. Video card with 1-2GB dedicated video RAM. Get at least 750GB high-speed SATA hard drive; you may also want to consider a SSD (Solid State) hard drive as a boot drive.

If you go to a large electronic store like Best Buy and ask them what is the best computer for running Photoshop, their eyes are liable to roll back in their had and they'll make gagging noises. If, however you ask them what is the best gaming computer, they will probably be able to go on for an hour or more, and most of the things that make a computer good for gaming also makes it good for Photo editing.

Finally, not to put you off, but as Singleviking mentioned, you can use the search function at the top of the page to look up computers or editing computers and get a wealth of information and advice. As a new member to UHH you may not be aware but this topic comes up frequently and there have been some very good discussions on the topic. I also have every confidence that many other members will gladly jump in and give some great advice on this thread as well.

Welcome to the UHH and I hope you pick up the 70D soon. Should be a fine camera and the start of a very rewarding hobby :D

Check out CyberpowerPC.com.

Suggest Win 7 Pro, i7 processer, 32GB ram, SSD (512GB or higher) for main drive and HD (1TB or higher) for storage and back up. Also get a video card with at least 2GB ram and a high res monitor.

If you are into PP don't skimp on the computer. The additional speed will facilitate processing options you have never consider and take your images to a higher level.

The best thing I did for my photography, computer-wise, was to purchase a 27" Mac. From the editing side it's great to work on images on this computer. From a computer side, the Mac OS is quite a bit better than Windoze. For other work, I do use two Win 7 and one Linux computer, but the Mac is my imaging computer from now on.
