Apple's Aperture now working so good, hard to belive it's about to be killed!

I have been a long time Aperture user. Over the years I have been tempted many times to switch over to Adobe's Light Room but never got around to it.

I bought a Sony A77 II camera this Spring and sadly discovered that Aperture was unable to recognize the RAW files or do anything with them. I was unsure what to do with all RAW files of hummingbirds I was taking with that camera or how to store them or where. I discovered that I could force Aperture to store the RAW files by dragging and dropping them into Aperture next to the JPGs produced by my new camera. Aperture could not open the RAW files. They appeared as a black box with a warning triangle stating "Unrecognized Format". I then discovered that DxO was able to open the RAW files, so I used DxO to convert some of the best looking photos into PDF and/or TIFF files that that Aperture would recognize and save for me. I was more interested in actually taking pictures at the time, so I just saved everything as best as could, including those black boxes representing unopened RAW files.

Then Apple blow my mind by coming out with Yosemite and an upgrade to Aperture. Everything worked very well together and now the new version of Aperture now recognized the RAW more recent RAW I was taking with my A77 II. I had hoped that the black boxes representing my older RAW files would magically become recognizable as photos of hummingbirds. They did not. :-(

Today I decided to try something: I exported all the black boxes to a folder on my desktop as "original". Now, Yosemite recognized them for what they were, RAW files. I deleted the meaningless black boxes from my Aperture data base and dragged the now recognized RAW files back into Aperture where they belonged. Now everything is working and I can see the images like I had hoped. :-P  :)

I'm still is shocked disbelief that Apple is going to replace Aperture with somethings called "pictures"(?????), now that they finally got Aperture working so well!!!!

Oh well, all my stuff is now working and backed-up. I'll wait and see what happens in the near future. :?:

I have been a long time Aperture user. Over the ye... (show quote)

APERTURE does NOT know anything about any raw file at all... the raw conversion engine built into the OS does the job for Aperture and IPhoto... so when you upgraded to Yosemite, you got the latest raw engine...

I was an Aperture user for many years myself... when Apple announced they were dropping support for Iphoto & Aperture, I jumped into Lightroom and Photoshop with both feet. I signed up for the Adobe CC program for 10.00 a month.

I do believe that I saw a huge difference with Adobe Camera Raw & Lightroom vs Apple raw and Aperture.

The learning curve was pretty short as I was using a managed library in Aperture, so I was real comfortable with Lightroom's catalog system right off.

I do think Adobe does a much better job with the raw conversion.

You are probably correct. I may change to Lightroom myself in the future. I do resent paying $10 per month to anyone (Apple or Adobe)

When I get serious about converting a raw image I prefer DxO, as I explain in this thread.
