Heres a question for those who know.
What setting are there in your camera (D7100) to conserve your battery life it seems my battery is used up before a game is over.
My D90 doesnt have that problem I can shot three games before the battery wears out.

Does it also do that with an alternate battery?

Check the manual, but there is a section where you can set how long the LCD screen stays "on" after a shot, displaying the image just shot and brightness. The LCD screen is a battery hog.
It's in the setup menu on my D600 so I'm sure that's where yours is. Our cameras' controls are practically identical. It is the wrench symbol in the menu.

That has no bearing on the question. How long have you had the camera? I have had mine 4 months and the battery lasts longer now than it did when I got it. I went to Wilcox, Az The first weekend in October and shot around 600 photos and still had 41% of the battery left. The first 3 times out with it I did a battery change at 350 photos. I was out last weekend and did 200 photos and I just looked and my battery level is still 52%. I also got a second battery when I got the camera.

The D7100 uses Nikons longest lasting battery, the EN-EL 15. Many users report over 3000 shots per charge, I regularly get over 2000 shots on them (and I use 4 bodies all taking the same EN-EL 15 battery).
The D90's biggest fault was the already old EN-EL 3e series battery as it was very soon discovered it did not have the life needed for much of the brand new video feature at all.

Are you looking to see your images constantly? That eats up energy. The camera has to write much larger files too, that takes energy. I'll bet you knew your D90 so well you didn't even check the playback screen?

Have never had a en-el15 battery die on me and I've had at least 2000 shots on one!! Hope you're not using a 3rd party battery---I did have one die after about 7 months of use, never bought anything but Nikon since. Just shot 2nd camera at a wedding last Sat and one of the cameras I used was a D7000 with a en el15 battery in it. 615 shots taken and the battery life light never moved......
