A River Runs Through Our Valley - Come take a walk with me. (16)
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.
- Norman Maclean (1902-1990)I live in a valley in NE PA, and "a river runs through it." I shot these pics as I walked along that river on the
Lackawanna Heritage Valley Trail, part of which follows the river for about a half mile in a local park (between 13 and 14 on
this map).
A week before I shot these, the river was so low you could walk across without getting your knees wet! But a few days before, upstate from us was hit with 4" to 6" of rain causing flash flooding of all the feeder streams flowing into the river. The river level rose quickly. Even so, our county is still the driest in the state and we are still 6" below average rainfall for the year.
Each time I walk along this river, I'm reminded of the 1992 movie, "
A River Runs Through It," based on the Norman Maclean novel. And yes, our river has native Brown Trout, like the fish seen in
this clip, one of the best moments of the movie.
After viewing my pictures, you might enjoy watching
this clip (Fishing with Father) and
this clip, (the ending) from the movie.
There are a lot of great autumn photos in the
Autumn contest. Go there and vote for your favorite. I entered one of my river pics (
A walk in the park: A River Runs Through It).
Enjoy these. Comments welcome.

Love these photos Gene.
Great movie. We are in a terrible drought here.
Wish we had some rivers. I lived in Pittsburgh
back in the 70's. They sure had a lot of rivers there.
Some covered bridges that made for good photo's too.
Thanks for sharing
Great shots. But, your name is distracting to the overall excellence of the pictures. Smaller? Move to one side? Just my honest opinion. As General Custer said 'keep on shooting!"
That is a beautiful area and you have shown it off well with your great photographs. Thanks for letting us walk with you today.

:-) We didn't hit drought stage but came close - by our standards. Yes, P-burgh does have some great rivers. Glad you like these, Mark, and thanks for looking.

:-) You're welcome - glad you came for the walk. Its one of my favorites. A place we went even before the old coal mining and railroad land was reclaimed. Glad you like the pics and thanks for looking.

:-) Thank you, Jer. Lots of color when I shot these. You were on the Rt. 6 that passes within a mile of my house - and the river in my pics. Always plenty of photo-ops wherever you go in PA. :D Glad you like these and thanks for looking.
