Nikon D3100 & Nikkor 24-120mm

Hi gang, I purchased a nikkor 24-120mm AF lens to use on my Nikon D3100. It doesn't have VR or SMW which is just fine. When affixing it to my camera I get a message on my camera that I have to lock the aperture at the highest level, which is 22 (I think). This is not a DX lens. It has pretty fair zoom and the manual front focus ring works vey nicely. I use mostly manual settings on the camera anyway. It's nice for portraits. What Am I missing when using this lens with the lower aperture settings not being available with this camera?

When you turn the lens ring to smallest aperture (f/22), then the camera will allow auto-aperture to work properly. You can still focus wide-open, and in shutter priority, the camera will adjust aperture for proper exposure.

The lower aperture settings are controlled thru the camera. Setting the lens at f22 or whatever the highest number is then locking the ring lets the camera do the aperture adjusting.

These answers are correct.

I also suspect this lens does not have autofocus in the lens. Your D3100 does not have an autofocus motor in the camera so you will have to manually focus this lens with your camera. (You need to go to a D7xxx or D6xx or higher to get the autofocus motor in the camera body.)

I think you forgot about the d70, d100. d200, d300, d2, I think also the, d80, d90, d1 will auto focus without afs lenses.

Yes, it is true that the older cameras also do...before in-lens autofocus became standard.
