Sumtin weird Happen ?????

Picked up a XSi Rebel and a 1.8 NiftyFifty ( fm difference sources).

When I first used the combination it seemed that the focus was not on spot.. Slightly out...

Now- after a week-ten days of using and learning the details of both, it seems the focus is spot on... Nails it every time...

My question: Do cameras and lens sorta - sometimes take a little getting use to each other before working as a team ???

Were you using single point focusing, or more of a matrix zone?

Possible that there was not a good contact due to slackness in mount or slight coating on contact points. Movement through use and or taking lens on an off could have realigned contacts or cleaned them off.
Other idea, you subconsciously learned exactly where to place the focus point(s).

I think it really more likely that you are getting used to both of them, and as you said, "learning the details".

I have owned approx 4 or 5 Rebels and am quite familar with them and with their usage, and in one of my lives I was a newspaper photographer...

No, I don't start drinking early in the morning, and I don't hear little voices comming from my camera...

I can see that as possible, but I cleaned the contrack points on both pieces...
Possible that maybe the little gears were not going their proper way from lack of use, and now they're working freely ???

???

it's impossible to drink all day if you don't start in the morning. You gotta have goals. sorry couldn't resist if I had to guess I would probably say it was the contacts, if no settings were changed on the camera

The sad thing is, I will probably go to my grave without really knowing... :|

Just what is wrong with your camera that you DON'T hear those voices? Is it your hearing? My little voices come through loud and clear! Wait! There they are again: "I'm lonely! Buy more camera stuff...."
I've been hearing those voices ever since I bought my first DSLR!
:-D

That is very possible, dried oil deposits and just stiff from lack of use. This often happens with all sizes and types of machines. Use wears the deposits away and they start working properly. I used to help a friend who ran auctions of gun collections. Often we had to work them over and clean them to get parts moving properly that had been on a display rack or in a safe for years or decades.

You probably got used to the camera, not the camera getting used to the lens.

Seems strange, but could happen. I've had camera problems that I might have been imagining as they too seem to suddenly appear and then disappear. Grease, dirt, lint on contacts or glass could cause focus / exposure problems when on automatic. Lens - Camera Chips and/or CPU's learning one another, less likely or possible. You may never know.

This brings up a related issue -- that you would not have. A pal of mine likes to buy used or "defective" older film cameras on ebay, repair them and then resell them at a minimum profit or give them away to students and friends. He also takes photographs for a hobby. I learned this from him: You would be surprised to learn how many people do not know that you eventually have to replace the batteries in a camera. He will literally get a Pentax MX for $25 on ebay that only needs a bit of cleaning and new batteries. I wish he's try his hand at digital cameras (for me). Imagine a Nikon D810 or D4 with only dead batteries for $100!
