Been lurking in the shadows for a few weeks and I love your format. Very good questions and excellent answers. I have already learned a few things.
I purchased a Nikon D5100 over the Christmas season and I have been reading and doing some shooting to help my learning curve-kind of slow as I am over 80 and I just graduated from a Canon digital point and shoot mentality to this whole new universe of DSLR. Got Scott Kelby's three books on digital photography and David Busch's field guide for the D5100.
I live 1/2 the year in the Finger Lakes Region of New York and the cold months in Venice, Florida. I will learn much more as time goes by and I will participate as needed. Ron

Hi Ron and welcome to the UHH. I just got the same machine just after thanksgiving.....still learn'n it. Upgraded from a Kodak bridge camera Z981. Nice shot Ron....Florida has endless ops.
Sounds like your off to a good start.
Welcome to the forum, Ron. My good friend's mother also lives in Venice during the winter. She does water color painting.
Nice framing of the water in your shot. Not sure if you're looking for feedback on the picture or not (don't read further if your not :)
The trail fence distracts the eye away from the water. Cropping the fence out would make the shot too short and look like a panoramic shot. I recommend taking a shot at the fence either from above the top rail or maybe between the two horizontal rails with the small tree off to the far right side of the picture.

There are a lot of Nikon shooters on this forum you should feel right at home.
I wasn't expecting a review of my photo but it was welcome. The photo was the first of a few taken with my new camera. I kind of liked it.

Ron, welcome aboard......... you are over 80 and have bought your first dslr???? THATS GREAT!! Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks....post away!!
Ron, I'm excited for you. Both authors are great. I've been a fan of Scott Kelby for several years. I love his teaching style. Sounds like your location will lend itself to some great photography. When it's 20 degrees and below, I'm usually inside where it's warm. Maybe, one day I'll become a snowbird too.
Welcome to the Ugly Hog, Ron. We are glad to have you here and are looking forward to some of your photos so we can get to know you better.
