My nephew asked me to take some family pictures for him.

I have searched on this site and others about family photo shoots but I would really appreciate any tips or do's and don'ts Here are the details:

2 adults and 2 children, a newborn and 2 year old.

I am hoping to do this outdoors... I am not great at indoor lighting etc.

I have a D7000, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 18-200 and a 50mm 1.8 etc.
Tripod, sb900 (barley know how to use), remote shutter release, reflector and a Gary Fong diffuser.

Any advice would be great..thanks!

You can certainly take several picture adjusting you aperture and shutter to play with you lighting conditions. I would def go to Google, type in 'family portraits' and then click the images button. Positioning your subjects in an interesting arrangement is also key to an interesting photo. That Google search will give you examples. Watch you DOF. There are many threads giving a link to a DOF Calculator to show you where you must stand and your optimal setting to keep everyone in focus. You can download one to your smart phone. Shoot in RAW.

BYW, you can also download a light meter to you smart phone. Not the greatest, but beats a blank. Not sure it will be better than you cameras light meter.

Suggest looking up a few you tubes on using "fill flash" and "flash exposure compensation" (FEC).
I like to start with 5.6-6.3 for portraits as a very general rule, then adjust from there.
I like the 70-200 for most portrait work.
Tripods are a good thing, but not sure I would use it shooting outdoors with little ones as subjects.

If you can do it outside (do it quickly, it's going to get cold soon! ), you can keep it simple: 24-70mm lens, SB900 on camera in TTL mode, probably with the Gary Fong diffuser aimed at them, and flash compensation set to -1 or -2. Taking the flash off the camera would be nice, but with a 2 year old, it's a bit of a challenge and you want to be ready to get the shot when it happens. I would not try to "overpose" them, just let them be fairly natural.

What part of shooting this aren't you familiar with?

Camera settings?

Lighting?

Posing?

Interpersonal stuff?

Lenses?

Be specific what you don't know.

IMHO I think the best thing about family poses is how you arrange them. Everyone in line or by size is boring. Step out of the box. You can have the best camera and lenses but if the pose is stiff or boring the shot is ho hum. Make them happy or goofy or quiet just not boring. IMHO

Thanks for the tips, I will try not to overpose and take some candid shots as well just to show the interaction etc.

We will be in a park like setting.

As far as what I am not sure of its:

indoor lighting....never been very succesful

camera settings.... I am getting better but its still trial and error for me. I will probably just use Aperture priority and adjust from there.

Posing...I have been looking on line but really that will depend on the willingness of the 2 year old!

lenses....one camera will have the 24-70 and the other the 70-200.

I will learn more about the fill flash before the shoot. I have used it but very limited in my knowledge on the sb900.

Thanks to all!
