The top-of-the-line Canon Speedlite is not heavy compared to the weight of camera and lens, so you shouldn't need to buy another tripod, as long as you are mostly using it for level shots. If you are tilting the camera significantly for some shots, the addition of a shoe-mount flash may cause tipping. Just try it--if the flash makes your tripod unstable, buy a better tripod, but I wouldn't buy one in advance.

I have the Canon Speedlite 600. Expensive, but it is very powerful and has so many features that I haven't figured half of them out yet. Good thing, it is not that much bigger and heavier than the next one down. The 430.

It looks like you are gearing up very quickly. Buying all Canon gear can be expensive. You may want to look into Yongnue products, they make a line of flashes that seem to be direct rip offs of Canon flashes. I use the Yn 565EX II model, with Yonguo triggers. Two of these flashes cost the same as one Canon flash, and is just as good. You may want to also look on Youtube for some videos on off camera flashes, and portrait photography.

Speedlight output power is measured as a "Guide Number". Yongnuo speedlights have a good reputation for dependability and quite affordable.
Here is a chart comparing GNs: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-208134-1.html
