This is going to sound dumb, but WTF does GAS mean? Obviously not "oxygen" or "methane". Note thinking from a scientist turned photographer.

It will be noted however that much GAS conversation does come from the same orifice as human methane.

I don't have gas, but I do sometimes want new equipment. Fortunately, it's not a syndrome. I prefer not to use terms like that - GAS, LOL, BFF.

Photography has enough genuine acronyms for me to remember without looking for more.

Meaning {said slowly}? Talking too much about the equipment you have and not enough about technique? Not sure I actually get it. GAS or whatever is a bad thing? In person photographers seem to talk a lot about equipment (my very old school term for gear). I'd often prefer talking about known famous images, photographers, techniques, and the history of photography but few people know what I'm talking about these days. Computers are all GAS too it seems.

GAS, it seems to me, is not photography-specific. It is a fun term to describe those who feel their (enter interest area here) equipment is somehow inadequate and needs to be supplemented or replaced by the new "gear". This can be to add capability, or, to somehow magically correct for poor technique. Fishermen, golfers, woodworkers, etc. are all affected in the same way as photographers.

I know, because, I too, suffer from GAS... And, in more ways than one!

GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome. As with any hobby with many equipment options, the more one gets into it, the more one wants to "upgrade" or add to their equipment. It's true for just about any hobby that exists... fishing, golf, audiophilia, car-collecting, wine-collecting, etc. In almost all cases, the equipment itself does not make the better or more capable hobbyist, so technique DOES matter. But, GAS is a lot of fun to manage, especially in an effort to avoid redundancy. ;)

Oh, OK that is a good or better explanation. I guess I don't really have GAS. For film photography I have not bought a new camera since 1980 and still have three (film) SLRs. No need to upgrade there. And for DSLRs I don't keep updating every model every couple years like many people. I'll keep using the same couple until I run them into the ground. I'm happy with 16MP. Though if I did go for a 24 or 36MP, the new one would be for macros and landscapes and keep the 16MP for portraits.

The thing I do keep buying is more and more CDs and LPs, but that is not really GAS, it is a collection. I play them on the same gear until the CD player, turntable, or receiver stop working.

I seem to be tipping over to the anti-gas area, where I'm quietly shedding excess "stuff" acquired during my "gas" period. It's just that I'm running out of room....and besides, the $$$ received can go to my "gas" photography malady!

It's what you pay $3.00 a gallon for at Cosco, and fill up the tank on a Land Cruiser that gets 16 MPG, while you have to pee so bad that you have to put your hand in your pocket to apply pressure so you won't have to go home instead of buying what you came to buy at Costco. Everybody knows that.

SPELLING ERROR: GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome

And sometimes, you really can't tell which orifice it emanates from.

Jerryc41, you do have GAS! It's just that in your case it's not a chronic condition.
