We were at the park and all of our kids were playing together. Here she is with her Verizon Smart Phone taking pictures of the kids at play, and I with my clunky 'ol dslr.

If you think about it, this photo and my commentary can go good in 3 different forums on UHH; the main forum, people photography, and the Photo Gallery. I chose the photo gallery for more coverage.

It could also go in Chit Chat as a social commentary! And don't be slighting your "clunky ol' DSLR". Not fair!

Yep, that is one more forum. As you may have guessed, I was being sarcastic about the dslr thing. Lol.

You're comparing apples to oranges... that's not fair. As far as I'm concerned anyone doing pictures with a phone is a "snapper" and not really serious about photography. That's fine if all you care about is snaps. Me I prefer real photography and use my Canon dslr all the time for stills and video.

Serious photographers like us will always opt for a real camera.

Thanks! And yeah, some of those smart phones have real good photo optics. I really like the Galaxy series of phones. I am not going to get rid of my dslr though. No way!

I tend to agree with you, but have you seen some of the serious attempts at photos done with a smart phone? Some are really, really good.

I still don't think a smart phone could do what I did here. I was about 75 ft. away using my 300mm lens and she was taking pictures of my grandson and her daughter coming through a tunnel slide. I had her squat down for this one because I wanted to tighten it up some.

I don't think she could pull this off with her phone. I can blow this pic up to the size of a barn without losing resolution. Even with the huge megapixel smart phones, I don't think that they could pull that one off either. I may be wrong though!

I agree. Nothing like a decent dslr. A friend of mine had a picture of her daughter on her phone. It looked like a superb photo on her phone at about 1.5 x 2.0 inches. She wanted me to try to make a larger photo. I downloaded into my computer. I did everything I could think of to make it look decent at larger than the original. It started to fuzz up a bit at 4x5 inches and anything larger began to pixelate. As long as you keep those phone pictures at their original size they are really good. Just don't try to enlarge them.

I bet they are trying to figure a way around that one.

Fine shot. Makes me smile at my human nature, and ol' clunky's handler did a good job with depth of field. My thought about the two cameras is that there's are situations where each is the best choice, and plenty of overlap.

Thank you! I was born and raised in Chicago. After college I bought a house in Mt. Prospect. Then I left. Anyway, I think camera phones are fun. Now everyone can enjoy taking pictures and not have the expense or waiting time of taking their film in for developing. An addition, if one does have a dslr and can not take it somewhere, they do have the opportunity to at least use their cell phone to snap a photo. This is how I see the overlap.
