Could it have been an exposure change? Manual mode or auto exposure?

I never under stood the advantage of viewing the focus point on an image. Sure, you can view the focus point that was chosen but not necessarily the area that it was focused on.
When handholding a camera I almost always use the single center focus point so if I focus then "recompose" my focus point is no longer on the area that I focused on.

In my opinion, for what it is worth, the use of seeing what the focus point of the image is simply to confirm that I was using proper technique and managed to get an image that was focused on what I wanted it to be focused on, like the eyes, etc....I use it as a confirmation and learning tool.

Thanks for the tip gang! I saw Jerry's post a while back but didn't act on it. Just installed the focus points plugin in LR 5.6 and it's way cool. Latest version has fixes for D5200.

Is it possible that my Shutter release focus-ON was causing it? I just noticed it was ON and not OFF. It would then focus when I recomposed the shot, over ridding the back button focus, right? I turned it OFF and taking some practice shots, Im not seeing the problem as before.

Easy to test... turn it on and use BBF to focus, then change the scene and use half shutter press - did it refocus?

On my D7100 switching to BBF shuts off shutter button focus....do not know about a D610...

Yes it did. That little setting was over riding but only when I recomposed. Something to watch out for I guess. It is off now!

I thought I knew about focusing etc, but I have had big problems with sharpness over my chosen focus area. I am sure I have done all the right things, still my focus is way out for some reason. The camera has been sent off to Nikon for an overhaul.

Truly I think it is me and I have just realised that when I am in manual focus, lock-on with a half shutter press, then recompose my image, without taking my finger off the press my camera is re-focusing on the recomposed section. How can this happen, can anyone help with this please.

I have a Nikon D300, probably with the larger lenses it is camera shake as I do find them a tad heavy without a tripod.
This must be happening in the other modes too.

If you are in MANUAL FOCUS, how is the shutter press refocusing?

It's worth remembering that the "focus and recompose" method always causes a defocusing of the detail on which you first chose to focus but whether that is noticeable depends on the available DOF. For instance, a long distance shot at f/8 will no doubt be fine whereas a portrait shot at f/1.4 will not.

Thank you for this. Nikon View NX always had this ability and I had always wanted it for LR also. Great little plugin.n

When using the back button, you press and hold it in while recomposing. If you release it the camera will re-focus when you depress the shutter button.
