I should have added: RAID isn't intended to replace backups, it is intended to increase the reliability of the live file system, to reduce the likelihood that you will have to recover data from the backups. But, no system is perfect, so backups are still needed.
absolutely agree that the NAS system does not replace backups at all. I do expect it to give my regular access a level of redundancy that will take care of most small hiccups in hardware.
Sure can't do anything about accidental deletions, etc. for that we still need our backups.
I am planning on using separate hard drives for backup. For that will probably use Thunderbolt connectivity for faster writing of the backups.
The costs are adding up but I look at it all as a necessity!
