This will most likely start a war, but whenever you add additional glass in front of the lens you will decrease light passing thru and effect the image.

I myself see much better image quality when shooting without UV filters. Granted my filters may have been a cheaper brand possibly, but I am of the camp that believes that the protection needed for a lens is afforded by using the LENS HOOD....

To each his own....

This is even more important when aiming at a strong light source...as was the case here.

Attached are pictures that I took of the Full Moon.

They were taken with a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 using a Canon EF-S55-250mm f/5.6 IS11 lens.

I am just a beginner, so I know that these pictures are not very good.

I would like to know what I did that caused double moons on some of the pictures.

Hi Binonut.
Your photos are just over exposed is all. To shoot pictures of a full moon you have to shoot at a high shutter speed. this photo was taken last night at a shutter speed of 1/3200 sec. hand held. with 300mm nikkor af lens. I'm not sure what caused your double image, unless you were shooting through a window. Hope this helps.
If more information is needed please let me know.

Thanks for any help given.

You need to spot meter and lower the ISO to 400 or 100. Remember you are recording bright light of the moon.
If more information is needed please let me know.

Thanks for any help given.

Thanks to all who have answered my questions regarding moon pictures.

Attached are my latest moon pictures, which I think came out better than the previous ones.

I handheld my camera for these shots, I used ISO 100, f5.6 and a 55-250 lens.

Did you use spot metering? So there you go always think of what kind of light you are shooting and that helps you more than just shooting. You got good results here. The moon is hard to get right because their can be stuff in the way. Try to shoot the moon after a storm or rain because it cleans the air for you. Things people don't think of.

Well try it with spot meter turn on if you have it. This seemed to work for you. What shutter speed did you use? I have done a lot of moon shots and this is what I use. I try different settings all the time to see what works the best. I want to try just a black sky to see how many stars I can get with my Nikkor 24mm f/2.8.
