I was looking for a deer but found a woodpecker

Cropped from a tiny section of a much larger photo. I was looking for deer in the snow today. I spotted my herd of five that live on my property but they were hidden behind brush and not worth photographing. A woodpecker flew in front of me and landed on a tree.

Not a deer

Very nice. It is a Flicker of some sort.

You may not have gotten the deer but you still got a nice photo while you were out. I would say that was a successful time out.

That's a nice photo of a female Northern Flicker of the "Yellow-shafted" sub-species. They are often seen on the ground as they like to eat ants.

Thank you for identifying her for me. That photo was taken through my window with a 300mm lens. She was on a tree in my back yard.

And here is the surprise:
The original full frame / un-cropped photo. This is an advantage of 24.7 MP camera.

BTW, the photo was taken through a window using a 300mm f/2.8 lens.
