I just inherited an AF 50mm 1.4D lens. I have a D5200 that I was going to use it on primarily but does this lens AF on this body. If not, should I use it on my D7100. Thanks
AF lenses are old technology that depend on a motor in the camera body to drive the focus mechanism. Current AF-S lens Ed have the motors built in and don't rely on the body. AF-S lens wre introduced in 1998. Current camras will only work with AF-S lenses. The AF will require manual focus. I discovered this when I gave my old 50 mm AF to my daughter for her new Nikon 5100

It will work on the D7100.

From the knowledge base - can I use my old lens on my new camera:
AF lenses:
These lenses use a mechanical coupling between the lens and camera to focus. The focus motor is in the camera, and through a series of gears that drive the lens' focusing mechanism allow the lens to locate the optimal focus. These lenses can be used on any D-SLR which has a focus motor. The only cameras lacking the focus motor at this time are the D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D40X and D40 cameras.

From the past 5 years, the Nikon D3x00 and D5x00 cameras basically need AF
-S to autofocus. All other Nikon bodies (D7x00 and FX) will autofocus an AF lens.

Not all current cameras, only the D3x00 and D5x00.
I mean no offense with my question but I am wondering, if you have the cameras and lens in front of you why you don't simply mount the lens on the camera and see for yourself if it will auto focus or not.

No offense. I didn't want to mount the lens on my d7100 not knowing if it would somehow damage the body.

Use it on your D7100 for autofocus or D5200 for Manual focus only.

That is a valid point, there are some combinations which can cause damage. For example, using a Nikon teleconverter with most Nikon zoom lenses can have optics contact each other. But you can safely mount any Nikon autofocus lens on any Nikon DSLR.

Not true.AF-S lenses will work fine on D7000, D7100, etc. as they have the focus motor in the camera. The D3000-3300 series as well as D5000-5300 need lenses with the motor.

:?: Would not any sensible person simply look it up in their owner's manual :?: :?:
